Draeger’s Update
As many of you know, Draeger’s has decided to close its San Mateo branch by the end of February. This is a great disappointment to City Council, City staff and our entire community. There were approved plans to redevelop the building that would call for Draeger’s to vacate in 1+ years and return when the construction of a new building was complete. The Draeger’s Board, however, judged the economics of the business such that they should shut down and not come back when the new building is ready.
We are working together, along with the Downtown San Mateo Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and the developer to identify both short and long-term food business tenants for the Draeger’s space. I welcome any ideas you have.
Draeger’s has been a great community partner for many years in San Mateo and we thank them for all they have given our city. They feel the same way toward San Mateo and are working hard to ensure their employees have a place at one of their other locations.
Draeger’s Market owner John Draeger said in a statement, “We recognize the important role this store has played in San Mateo, and we are thankful for our loyal customers and dedicated employees who have supported us over the years. Our priority during this transition is to provide support to our employees, offering opportunities within other locations where possible.”
I will keep you updated as there is more news.
