On May 12, 2025, the Cities of San Mateo and Burlingame held a joint public meeting at the Burlingame Community Center to address resident concerns about speeding on Barroilhet Avenue, particularly near its intersection with Occidental Avenue. Barroilhet Avenue serves as a shared border between the two cities from El Camino Real to Elm Avenue, with jurisdiction split down the centerline. West of Chester Way, the roadway transitions into the City of Hillsborough. Approximately 25–30 residents from both cities attended.
Meeting highlights included:
Staff presented vehicle speed and collision data for the area near Occidental Avenue, confirming that the corridor qualifies for consideration of traffic calming measures, including speed cushions.
Attendees expressed concern about inconsistencies between state-reported crash data (from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System) and their lived experiences but appreciated the spirit of collaboration.
There was strong support for installing speed cushions west of Occidental Avenue.
Residents also requested consideration of traffic calming east of Occidental Avenue, extending to El Camino Real.
Staff committed to collecting additional speed data east of Occidental using Burlingame’s equipment to further assess conditions.
Next steps will be coordinated between both cities as staff analyze the new data and explore potential traffic calming solutions.
